Phuket does not have one type of gym member. Some people live on the island year-round. Others are here for a short holiday, a longer stay, a competition camp or a structured fitness break. Some want one coached session; others need a regular training base for several weeks.
That is why choosing the right membership matters. The most suitable option is not automatically the longest or the most comprehensive. It is the one that matches how long you are in Phuket, how often you realistically plan to train and whether you want coached classes, independent gym access or both.
At Khunpon Martial Arts in Cherngtalay, the formats are designed around those different needs: single and multi-class passes, Open Gym access, Unlimited Martial Arts, Unlimited Fitness and Unlimited Full Access. Training covers Muay Thai, MMA, BJJ, HYROX, strength and conditioning, Circuit and HIIT, alongside private training and a multidisciplinary coaching team. Current prices for all of them are on the pricing page.
What do people look for in Phuket?
Detailed public data on gym-membership preferences in Phuket is limited. There is no reliable dataset showing how many residents choose monthly memberships, how many visitors buy day access or which format is most popular.
What you can see is a varied island audience. Phuket is both an established residential community and an international destination, with people arriving for holidays, longer stays, work, sport and training. That creates a real need for flexible access, and gyms across the island commonly offer day access, weekly and monthly memberships, independent gym use, group classes and combinations of the two. That shows what is available, not what is most popular.
The practical questions people ask tend to be the same:
- Can I train without signing a long-term contract?
- Is there a day pass?
- Can I join one Muay Thai or BJJ class?
- Is there Open Gym access?
- Can I train for one week?
- Can I combine martial arts and fitness?
They all point to one conclusion: people arriving in Phuket do not all need the same kind of membership.
What is a drop-in class?
A drop-in class, or single-class pass, gives you one scheduled group session. It may suit:
- Someone visiting Khunpon for the first time.
- A traveller with a tight itinerary.
- A beginner who wants to try the gym before choosing a longer option.
- An experienced athlete passing through Phuket.
- Someone who wants one coached session rather than independent gym access.
If it will be your first Muay Thai class, our guide to your first Muay Thai class covers what to wear, gear hire and how the class runs.
A single class is not the same as an unlimited one-day membership. It gives you one group class, while an unlimited day covers broader access within its membership category.

Check the timetable before you arrive. Depending on the day, a single-class visitor may be choosing between Muay Thai, MMA, BJJ, HYROX, Circuit or HIIT. A drop-in class is a useful starting point, but it is not a full assessment of every programme: different disciplines have different coaching styles, training partners and demands.
What is a class pass?
A class pass gives you a fixed number of group classes to use within a set period. Validity starts on first use.
| Class pass | Valid for |
|---|---|
| 1 class | 1 day |
| 5 classes | 15 days |
| 10 classes | 30 days |
| 20 classes | 60 days |
| 40 classes | 90 days |
A pass suits people whose schedule is flexible but not completely predictable. A visitor may want to train several times over a fortnight while leaving room for beaches, excursions, work or rest days. It can also suit Phuket residents who do not want unlimited access, or whose working week changes from one week to the next.
The important point: a bigger pass only helps if you can realistically use the classes before it expires. If you train irregularly, a smaller option may serve you better, even if a larger bundle looks more flexible at first. Ask the team about bookings, unused classes, extensions and freezing before you buy.
What is Open Gym access?
Open Gym is independent use of the Khunpon facility during normal opening hours. It does not include group classes. It may suit:
- Independent lifters.
- Visitors following their own strength programme.
- Athletes who need space for supplementary training.
- People who prefer to train alone.
- Members who want the facility without committing to scheduled classes.
- Travellers keeping a routine between sightseeing or work.

Open Gym runs from one day up to longer periods. It is not 24-hour access: it follows the gym's opening hours. Independent use also does not mean every specialised area or piece of equipment is always free for unsupervised use. Follow the facility rules, and ask the team if you are unsure whether an area or piece of kit is right for independent training.
What is an unlimited membership?
An unlimited membership gives you the scheduled group classes in your chosen category for the length of the membership, plus Open Gym. The timetable and any booking or capacity rules still apply.
Unlimited does not mean every service at Khunpon is included. Private training, special events, seminars and food are separate unless the membership terms say otherwise. There are three unlimited categories.
Unlimited Martial Arts
Scheduled martial-arts group classes in Muay Thai, MMA and BJJ, plus Open Gym.
This suits a visitor who wants to train regularly in one martial art or combine several, for example Muay Thai as the main focus with BJJ or MMA on other days. It also suits an experienced martial artist who wants frequent training plus independent access for supplementary work. Private training (PT) is a separate service; ask the team about booking it.

Unlimited Fitness
Scheduled fitness group classes in HYROX, strength and conditioning, Circuit and HIIT, plus Open Gym.
This suits a HYROX athlete, a visitor following a conditioning block or someone who wants structured fitness sessions alongside independent strength training. Khunpon is an official HYROX Training Club, but a membership does not include race entry, event registration or competition services.
Unlimited Full Access
Everything together: scheduled martial-arts classes, scheduled fitness classes and Open Gym.
This is the unlimited option if you want to combine martial arts and fitness during your time in Phuket. One cross-training member might use Muay Thai, BJJ and strength training; another combines MMA with HYROX; someone else mixes technical classes with independent gym sessions. Its value depends on whether you will genuinely use more than one category. If you only plan to train one discipline, a more focused membership is usually the clearer choice.

One day in Phuket
A one-day visitor has several good options. A single class suits one coached experience. Open Gym suits someone who already has a programme and needs somewhere to train. An unlimited martial-arts, fitness or full-access day suits someone who plans to attend more than one relevant session that day.
But start with the timetable. There may not be several suitable classes on the day you visit, and back-to-back sessions may not be wise if you are new to training or still adjusting to Phuket's heat. Before you arrive, ask yourself:
- Do I want one coached class?
- Do I want to train on my own?
- Am I planning to attend several sessions?
- Am I interested in martial arts, fitness or both?
- Do I need time to recover between sessions?
For many first-time visitors, one well-chosen class is a better introduction than trying to fill the whole day with training.
One week in Phuket
A week gives you more flexibility, but it still does not mean the same access suits everyone.
The occasional trainee
If you want two or three classes during a holiday, a class pass is worth considering. You pick sessions around sightseeing, meals, work and rest.
The martial-arts visitor
If you plan frequent Muay Thai, MMA or BJJ, Unlimited Martial Arts may suit you better, particularly if you want to move between disciplines or add Open Gym sessions.
The fitness or HYROX visitor
A HYROX athlete or fitness-focused traveller may prefer Unlimited Fitness if the timetable matches their goals, or a class pass if they only plan to attend selected sessions.
The independent gym user
If your priority is your own programme, Open Gym is the one. You do not need group-class access you will not use.
The cross-training visitor
If you want both martial arts and fitness classes, look at Unlimited Full Access: the simplest way to combine the two, following the live schedule.
The best decision comes from planning your likely training week before you buy. Look at the timetable, mark the sessions you genuinely expect to attend and leave space for recovery.
One month or longer
Longer stays make consistency the bigger question. A Phuket resident may prefer a monthly or longer membership so they are not deciding on access every few days. A long-stay visitor may want the same routine while keeping enough flexibility to travel around the island. The main choices are:
- Open Gym for independent training.
- A larger class pass for a set number of sessions.
- Unlimited Martial Arts for regular combat-sports classes.
- Unlimited Fitness for regular HYROX and S&C training.
- Unlimited Full Access for cross-training.
- A three-month membership if you are confident you will stay consistent.
A class pass works well if you train around work or travel. Unlimited access is more practical if you expect to come regularly across the month. Neither is automatically better: the decision depends on how often you will actually train, not how often you hope to. Three-month access suits a Phuket resident, a long-stay visitor or someone in a structured training phase, and it is less suitable if your plans are uncertain.
Classes, independent training or both?
| Your priority | Option to consider |
|---|---|
| One coached session | Single class |
| A fixed number of classes | Class pass |
| Independent training | Open Gym |
| Regular Muay Thai, MMA or BJJ | Unlimited Martial Arts |
| Regular HYROX, S&C, Circuit or HIIT | Unlimited Fitness |
| Combining martial arts and fitness | Unlimited Full Access |
This is a starting point, not a substitute for checking the current timetable and membership terms.
How Khunpon fits different training needs
Khunpon's structure reflects the fact that people train in different ways. A short-term visitor can start with a single class or short access. Someone with a changing schedule can use a class pass. An independent athlete can choose Open Gym. A martial-arts student can focus on Muay Thai, MMA and BJJ, while a fitness-focused member trains through HYROX, strength and conditioning, Circuit and HIIT. If you want to combine disciplines, Full Access is the broader route, and if you want more individual attention you can ask about private training.
The multidisciplinary set-up helps because goals are rarely isolated. A martial artist may benefit from strength work. A HYROX athlete may need technical coaching or extra conditioning. A beginner may want to try several formats before settling on a routine.
Research supports regular physical activity, sensible progression and training that fits your circumstances. A recent review comparing individual and group-based programmes found both can be effective, with results depending on programme design and the person's needs rather than one format always winning. Group exercise can also bring social connection and accountability, although it does not guarantee that everyone attends more consistently.
At Khunpon, the practical question is simple: which structure makes it easier for you to train well and keep coming back?
