MMA at Khunpon: Understanding Mixed Martial Arts in Phuket
How mixed martial arts works, where it came from, why the cage matters, how fights are scored and how MMA training fits together at Khunpon in Phuket.
Mixed martial arts in small groups under a head coach with 18 years in MMA. Striking, wrestling and jiu-jitsu joined into one system, for competitors and for anyone ready for the whole sport.

Mixed martial arts takes the most effective parts of Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and puts them in one cage. Our MMA programme, led by Head Coach Mick, is built around technique, timing and fight IQ, whether you are preparing for an amateur or professional bout or want to test yourself against the most complete combat sport there is.
Classes are small on purpose. Fighters and martial artists travel to Phuket from all over the world for this kind of training, and a small group means the coach sees every rep: your transitions, your positioning and the details that decide exchanges.
MMA is open to every level, and we recommend at least a year of martial arts behind you before you join. Beginners who are up for the challenge are welcome on the mats; tell us where you are starting from and the coach sets the pace.
You start by learning how the disciplines fit together: blending strikes with takedowns, defending in grappling exchanges and managing distance the way MMA demands. You learn to strike safely while setting up wrestling entries, to keep control on the ground, to escape bad positions and to finish with submissions. Experienced athletes and aspiring fighters move on to situational drilling, technical combinations, controlled sparring and the conditioning that competition asks for.

A session opens with a warm-up built for the sport: shadowboxing, pummelling, wrestling shots and mobility work to switch the body on and keep it safe. Then the technique block, which is the heart of every class. Because groups are small, the coach can go deep on one thing at a time: cage work, the transition from striking to grappling, ground-and-pound mechanics.
Partner drills build timing, positional awareness and defensive reactions. Depending on the day there are controlled sparring rounds or situational live rounds, always about learning and technique rather than power, so you can apply what you have learned without unnecessary risk. Every class finishes with conditioning and stretching to support recovery and build the specific endurance MMA needs.

Modern MMA is the most direct preparation for competition, from a first amateur bout to a professional camp. Each session works the body and the mind through complex drills, live resistance and conditioning that builds serious strength and endurance.
Many people start MMA to test their limits, build functional muscle and get fight-ready fitness. Because it combines cardiovascular output with explosive grappling and striking, it is a complete full-body workout that strengthens the core, sharpens balance and lifts overall stamina. Beyond the cage, MMA is one of the most effective martial arts for self-defence: managing distance, stopping takedowns and controlling someone on the ground are practical skills for real situations.
Phuket has become a global hub for combat sports, and MMA is growing fastest of all. Fighters from around the world train here, surrounded by high-level training partners. At Khunpon you learn from coaches who understand how to blend separate martial arts into one MMA system, in a gym where technique and individual feedback come first. For many visitors, a block of MMA training in Phuket is the turning point in their game.
MMA runs Monday to Friday, 16:00 to 17:30, in its own area of the gym alongside the afternoon Muay Thai class. Message us with your experience and your goal and we will tell you what to expect on your first day.

We were very satisfied there; the facilities were excellent and it was really clean. The trainers in every class were very good, especially MMA under Head Coach Mick.
I trained regularly at Khunpon Gym for over two weeks and was absolutely thrilled. I especially appreciated the individual and detailed coaching in the MMA class. Coach Mick took great care of each participant and gave valuable tips to help us achieve the best possible training progress.
I highly recommend this gym. I attended MMA training, and Coach Mick took the time to explain everything in detail and address each participant's individual mistakes.
